After last week’s flurry of events from the US and the EU, this week will be a fairly quiet one in comparison. Check out the details of these events below:

Event: Consumer Price Index/Core CPI (MoM/YoY, Dec) – United Kingdom

Date: January 14, 2014

Time: 9:30am (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

The UK’s CPI and Core CPI numbers are expected to maintain their respective levels. The CPI is expected to be at 2.1 per cent over the past 12 months, as it had been during the previous period. The Core CPI, meanwhile, is seen to maintain its level at 1.8 per cent.

Event: Retail Sales (MoM, Dec) – United States

Time: 1:30pm (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

US retail sales in December are expected to be slightly lower than the previous period, with expectations of 0.4 per cent, compared to November’s 0.7 per cent.

Event: Unemployment Rate/Unemployment Change (December) – Australia

Date: January 16, 2014

Time: 12:30am (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

Australia’s unemployment rate is expected to worsen in the coming months due to the waning demand for its minerals. But in December, the unemployment rate is expected to stay level at 5.8% as the previous month. Unemployment change, meanwhile, is expected to be at 10,300 in December, compared to the 21,000 in November.

Event: Harmonised CPI (MoM/YoY, Dec) – Germany

Date: January 16, 2014

Time: 7:00am (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

Germany’s Harmonised CPI is expected to rise slightly against the previous period on a MoM basis. From the previous 0.2 per cent, it is seen to have grown by 0.5 per cent in December. Meanwhile, a growth of 1.2 per cent is expected in December compared to the past 12 months.

Event: CPI/Core CPI (MoM/YoY, Dec) – European Union

Date: January 16, 2014

Time: 10:00am (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

The EU’s CPI is seen to move positively in December compared to the previous month at 0.3 per cent. Meanwhile, it is also expected to grow in December on a 12-month period by a rate of 0.8 per cent.

Date: January 16, 2014

Time: 1:30pm (GMT)

What It Is About and Why It’s Important

The US will release a number of CPI-related data on Thursday. These include the CPI data for December, which has an expected growth of 0.3 per cent compared to the previous month and a 1.4 per cent growth over the past 12 months.
